Sorption and diffusion of toluene in isotropic and oriented linear polyethylene

Abstract: SynopsisSorption and diffusion of toluene vapor in linear polyethylene with mass-fraction crystallinity between 0.48 and 0.82 and draw ratios h up to 10 have been studied at 30°C. The sorbed concentration in the amorphous phase C. is little affected by crystallinity, indicating that the free-volume fraction is roughly the same for all isotropic samples. However, the diffusion path becomes more tortuous with increasing crystalline content, thereby leading to a sixfold drop in the zeroconcentration diffusion coe… Show more

“…That is, because dissolution of gas in semicrystalline polymer takes place in the amorphous part, and not in the crystalline part, the plasticizing factor may be related with the amorphous fraction of polymer. 35 Considering the crystallinities of LDPE (0.43 ) and PP (0.6 ) , values estimated from density data, the difference in the a values can be understood. However the reasons for the exceptionally high value of a for the Ne and H2 group in LDPE are not clear.…”

“…A complication that arises in this method is that diffusivities of guest molecules in a polymer membrane are sensitive to the level of dilation and plasticization that the polymer is experiencing. [18][19][20] This has been addressed by the introduction of a "cohort diffusion" concept, in which all molecules exhibit essentially a composition-averaged diffusivity throughout the membrane. 21…”

“…The penetrant, n -hexane, and amount of sorption increase the free volume in semicrystalline polyethylene during sorption. Molecular packing of amorphous phase for the high crystalline PE78 is expected to be tight (i.e., less free volume) at this stage, which hinders the penetration of vapor and is evidenced with a shallow slope. As vapor continuously sorbs to a site for sorption, the sorbed vapor may play a role as a plasticizer and increase the free volume so that the amount of sorption increases as indicated with a steep slope.…”
