Sonographic changes of the pancreas in chronic renal failure

Abstract: Several abnormalities regarding pancreatic morphology and function have been reported in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) with an incidence as high as 72%. In a prospective study we investigated 96 outpatients from our chronic ambulatory hemodialysis program by abdominal ultrasound. Of the patients with CRF, 20.6% were found to have morphologic alterations of the pancreas compared to 4.7% of controls. Although pathologic sonograms of the pancreas correlated with biliary disease, hyperparathyroidism an… Show more

“…Cystinuria has been associated with a variety of other disorders, including familial pancreatitis [35]. It is not clear whether this association is caused by co-transmission of one of the recently identified trypsinogen mutations that characterize hereditary pancreatitis, might indicate a de novo formation of pancreatic duct calculi in cystinuria or is based on the known association between chronic renal failure and pancreatic disease [36,37].…”

“…Duct calculi in patients with cystinuria, chronic renal insufficiency or renal failure may adversely affect the pancreas [37,38]. Lysinuric protein intolerance leads to inflammatory changes, necrosis, intraductal protein plugs, atrophy, and fibrosis in the pancreas [39,40]. Furthermore, pancreatitis has been reported in patients with pyruvate kinase deficiency [41] and acute intermittent porphyria [42][43][44][45][46].…”

“…Abdominal ultrasound in four planes (Picker 9000, 3.5 curved linear array) was evaluated as previously described [8]. Dilatation of the pancreatic duct > 4 mm, parenchymal calcifications and circumscript lesions like cysts and nodules were considered evidence of pancreatic disease.…”
