Sonochemical Synthesis of Mesoporous Titanium Oxide with Wormhole-like Framework Structures

Abstract: Ultrasound irradiation is proving to be an excellent method for the synthesis of mesoporous oxides. Here is reported the preparation of titania containing a framework of wormholes—a structural motif of importance for catalysis. Using ultrasonication with a long‐chain organic amine as a structure‐directing agent, the synthesis was complete in a few hours (the Figure shows particles of the as‐prepared material).

“…[15,16] Little work has been devoted to understanding the mode of formation of mesoporous titania [17±19] and elucidating the differences with respect to nanocrystalline titania. Much work has also been devoted to ways of templating mesoporous titania with supramolecular assemblies, based on surfactants and amphiphilic block-copolymers.…”

“…12 Similar low-angle XRD (SAXRD) patterns were previously observed on meso-TiO 2 synthesized via organic amine surfactant templates, [24][25][26] though the SAXRD peaks disappeared due to structure collapse above 300 C. The stronger SAXRD pattern of SE-meso-TON suggests that it is more resistant to sintering than SG-meso-TON. The high thermal stability of SE-meso-TON promises its great potential for application in photocatalysis and dye sensitized solar cells.…”

“…Such hierarchical porous architecture of the nanocrystalline TON is highly desired in solar energy conversion. 5,6,12,24,25 Fig . 3A shows the nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms of the SE-meso-TON and SG-meso-TON samples calcined at 450 C. The type-IV isotherm curves of the samples further veried their mesoporous features.…”

“…There are reports of the fast synthesis of mesoporous TiO2 within several hours, but the products are aggregated [26][27][28], amorphous [29], uneven [30] or in bulk [31,32]. Although mesoporous hollow TiO2 spheres have been intensively investigated [11,33,34], their low density/tap density can lead to a low volumetric performance.…”
