Some Thoughts on Operationalizing the Concept of Sufficiency in Efficiency Analysis

Abstract: The concept of sufficiency is rarely acknowledged in mainstream business economics and has not been addressed so far in the literature on efficiency analysis. In this paper, satisficing levels as known from the Efficiency Analysis Technique With Output Satisficing (EATWOS) and from its extension Efficiency Analysis Technique With Input and Output Satisficing (EATWIOS) are suggested to operationalize sufficiency in efficiency analysis. Moreover, a simple data transformation approach is proposed in order to use … Show more

“…Among these different tools, one of the simplest and most applied in this study, which can be used by managers when designing public policies, consists of a combination of different proposals, such as the TOPSIS method and the model weight restricted EATWOS method, without considering satisfaction levels or their adaptation to the object of study. The application of these tools, detailed in the results section, consists of the normalization of values for the analysis variables, the definition of distances between normalized variables to rank the aerodromes considered from the weights of the variables (Peters et al, 2012; Peters & Zelewski, 2016, 2018), establishing weights for the adopted variables (Uludağ, 2020), as well as the treatment of dummy variables applied to the studied aerodromes (Suits, 1957; Yip & Tsang, 2007).…”

“…These limitations include poor cash flow, lack of marketing expertise, business size, tactical and strategic customer-related problems (O'Dwyer et al, 2009) having few major clients (Jones and Rowley, 2011;Kolabi et al, 2011) shortness of staff, lack of management knowledge (Fillis, 2002;Jutla et al, 2002). Due to these limited resources, entrepreneurs focus more on short-term survival rather than long-term growth (Jayawarna et al, 2014;Peters and Zelewski, 2018). An earlier study conducted by Reijonen (2010) also found that marketing in SMEs focuses on present needs.…”
