Some Properties of Blood Stored in Anticoagulant CPDA‐1 Solution. A Brief Summary

Abstract: Approval of the new anticoagulant preservative, CPDA-1, was based in part on data from human clinical trials of CPDA-1 performed by six cooperating laboratories and two blood bag manufacturers. Biochemical and red blood cell survival properties of 123 units of blood stored for 28 to 35 days in CPDA-1 (as reported by cooperating laboratories) are briefly summarized.

“…Levels of 2,3-DPG seem to fall more quickly over the first 10-14 days in the heparin/CPDA-1 stored RCC, but concentrations did not differ signif icantly from the routine preparation at any point in time. Our data are similar to those published for CPDA-1 RCC [9,11].…”

“…On the other hand, liquid storage is limited to 5 weeks for whole blood and 7 weeks for packed red cells. 9,10 The efficiency of preoperative deposit in the liquid state thus depends on the rate of recovery from blood loss, that is, on the degree of stimulation of erythropoiesis.…”
