Some New Luminescent Compounds Based on 4-Methylbenzylamine and Lead Halides

Abstract: Compounds of the general formula (CH 3 NH 3 ) n 1 (CH 3 C 6 H 4 CH 2 NH 3 ) 2 Pb n X 3n+1 , where X = I, Br, Cl and n = 1, 2, 3,..., were prepared and characterized analytically and spectroscopically. Moreover, (CH 3 C 6 H 4 CH 2 NH 3 ) 2 PbX 4 and (CH 3 NH 3 )(CH 3 C 6 H 4 CH 2 NH 3 ) 2 Pb 2 I 7 were characterized by X-ray crystal structure analysis. Their optical absorption and photoluminescence spectra exhibit excitonic bands, even at room temperature.

“…Only, the ambient conditions OA, PL, PLE and PC spectra were recorded by instrumentation described elsewhere [13]. The spectra were found to be identical to the corresponding spectra of thin films obtained from solutions (see [10,12,13]). However, the excitonic PC bands of samples obtained from melts were found to be more intense and sharper than those obtained from solutions.…”

“…Details on the crystal growth and room temperature optical properties have been reported by Papavassiliou et al [8]. It consists of a well layer of two-dimensional network of PbBr 6 octahedrons and a barrier layer of 4-methybenzylamine (CH 3 C 6 H 4 CH 2 NH 3 ) [8].…”
