Some Effects of Nitrogen Fertilizer, Maturity, and Light on the Composition of Orchardgrass1

Abstract: Synopsis Nitrogen‐fertilized orchardgrass forage contained more crude protein, nitrate, and water than control forage. The effects were less marked with advancing maturity but continued through the seed stage. Fertilized forage contained less sugar previous to flowering. Composition changes were greater when fertilized plants were shaded. The highest mean nitrate level observed was 2.4%.
