Some applications of natural polymeric materials in oilfield operations: a review

Abstract: Naturally occurring macromolecular materials can be turned to value-added resources for applications in oil and gas production. The use of these materials has become necessary due to the environmental requirements that are associated with the disposal of oilfield chemicals after usage, sustainability of raw materials for producing the chemicals, and the need for reducing the overall cost of hydrocarbon production. This review presents the applications of natural polymers in oilfield operations including drilli… Show more

“…Presently, many researchers have introduced CNCs into polymer gel systems to improve further thermal stability, salinity resistance, and mechanical strength ( Goetz et al, 2009 ; Sampath et al, 2017 ). Adewole and Muritala (2019) previously summarized the application of several natural polymers in oilfields. From the application aspect of petroleum engineering in the future, this section highlights the fundamental performance, strengthening mechanism, and microstructure of cellulose-enhanced gel systems, as shown in Table 2 .…”

“…Currently, the demand for the production of environment-friendly material is increasing and the use of bio-renewable resources for the production of biopolymers have gained a great deal of attention from researchers because of their low cost and ready availability (Agustin et al 2014;Khandanlou et al 2014;Liu 2011;Liu and Huang 2013;Oun and Rhim 2015;Raval et al 2016;Verbeek 2012). By doing so, oilfield production subsectors will be able to minimize waste through efficient utilization of raw materials, mitigate health, safety, and environmental issues by avoiding the use of toxic and hazardous solvents (Adewole and Muritala 2019).…”

“…Moreover, these natural polymers are inexpensive, widely available, and easily biodegradable compared to common green inhibitor such as PASP and PESA that will be discussed more in the following sub-section (Yu et al 2018). Making use of this enormous amount of materials in upstream operations of the oil and gas industries will provide a better and more economical alternative for waste management and environmental pollution (Adewole and Muritala 2019). The results of a study done by Boels and Witkamp (2011) shows that the ability of the biopolymers to mitigate precipitation is controlled by their degree of carboxylation (Boels and Witkamp 2011).…”
