Solvent selection for biphasic extraction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural via multiscale modeling and experiments

Abstract: We report a comprehensive solvent selection framework where the COSMO-RS model is combined with high-throughput experiments at 298 and 423 K to formulate an extractant library for the reactive extraction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF).

“…52 COSMO-RS has been recently applied in solvent screenings of biomolecules, e.g. for estimating the IL-solubilities of cellulose 53 , partition coefficients of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in different biphasic solvent systems 54 , or extraction of lipids from yeast 55 . Furthermore, COSMO-RS was used to predict partition coefficients in biocatalytic biphasic systems 56 and was also applied for solvent screenings for lignin-based biorefineries 57,58 .…”

“…A common, and widely applied, strategy to improve the selectivity toward furfural and HMF is the use of water-immiscible organic solvents, such as toluene, methylisobutylketone, diethyl ether, ɣ-valerolactone (GVL) or p-xylene, to form an aqueous-organic biphasic system. 1,30,37,[54][55][56][57][58] Such aqueous-organic biphasic systems can be low-cost, relatively non-toxic and environmentally friendly. The concept of biphasic operation, based on the process of reactive extraction, exploits the continuous liquidliquid extraction of the newly formed HMF or furfural into the organic phase.…”

“…[59][60][61][62][63] The characteristics of these biphasic systems are variable in terms of catalysis and composition. 30,37,[54][55][56] While homogeneous catalysis from mineral acids remains the 14 preferred source, in several studies heterogeneous catalysis has also been successfully applied at biphasic conditions. 30,37 The effect of adding a water-immiscible layer affects the sugar-to-furan selectivity by continuous extraction of the newly formed HMF or furfural into the organic phase.…”
