Solvent Extraction Studies of Molybdenum (VI), Cobalt (II) and Copper (II) with Tri‐N‐Octylamine and Thiocyanate Ion

SOLVENT EXTRACTION STUDIES OF MOLYBDENUM (Vl), COBALT (11) AND COPPER (11) WITH TRI-N-OCTYLAMINE AND THIOCYANATE ION ABSTRACTThe extraction of the thloCyaMte complexes of mdybdenum (Vl), cobalt (11) and copper (11) with tri-n-octylamine, yielding orange-red, Mue and yellowish green complexes respectively has been investigated as a function of the acMlty of the aqueous phase and of the thiocyanate and amine concentrations. Under proper operating condltions extraction yields of 95% can be obtained. The mdybdenum complex has an absorption maximum at 470 nm wkh a molar absorpthrity of 2.6 x lo4 dm3moi-' cm-' in cyclohexane, whilethecobalt complexhasanabsorptlonmaximumat622nmwithamdarabsorptiv~of2.5~ 103dm3moV1 cm-l indichlorethane.The copper complex in chloroform has no maximum absorption.The separation of copper from mdybdenum has successfully been accomplished. INTRODUCTIONOver the last ten years, the analytical selectivity of the formation of ion association complexes for extracting and determining different metals such as chromium', cobal?, molybdenum5 and beryllium6 ions has been reported by different authors. In this paper, ion-association complexes formed between molybdenum, cobalt and copper ions each with tri-n-octylamine and thiocyanate ion were used for the extraction of those three metals and for the spectrophotometric determination of molybdenum and cobalt ions.
