Solvent Effects on the Electrochemical Behavior of TAPD-Based Redox-Responsive Probes for Cadmium(II)

Abstract: Two tetralkylated phenylenediamines (TAPD) 1 and 2 have been prepared by reductive alkylation of para-dimethylaminoaniline with furfural or thiophene 2-carboxaldehyde, respectively. Their chelation ability has been evaluated as electrochemical guest-responsive chemosensors for Cd(II) in acetonitrile (ACN), dimethylformamide (DMF), propylene carbonate (PC), and nitromethane (NM). The voltamperometric studies showed that these compounds are able to bind the Cd(II) cation with strong affinities except in DMF. The… Show more

“…The observed cathodic redox process in the Cd(MIPM)2Cl2 voltammogram at E 1/2 = −0.926 V is most likely due to the reduction and reoxidation of the Cd(II)/Cd(0) couple. Moreover, we notice the presence of an irreversible peak at 0.585 V. In comparison to a previous work, this peak is probably due to the oxidation of the complex Cd(MIPM) 2 Cl 2 to the radical cation. Otherwise, the electrochemical behavior of Co(MIPM) 2 Cl 2 was found to be in agreement with the literature .…”

“…The C2 ‐PMMA has an elongated conjugated and electron‐rich structure thanks to the C2 unit, and less oxidation than the different donor substituted C1 ‐based monomer . The oxidation and reduction current peaks can be due to the formation of the radical cation/anion of thiophene and furan units, respectively . The increase in the oxidation peak during the anodic scan shows that a radical cation is formed in the electron‐donating moieties such as thiophene and furan, and then the electropolymerization reaction begins.…”

“…The linear regression equation of Zn (II) ions is I p = 1.318 + 0.0736 [Zn 2+ ] (R = 0.9903 with confidence level of 95%) (I p = A) in the concentration range of 5.0 Â 10 À5 to 6.0 Â 10 À4 M and exhibit detection limit of 2.5 Â 10 À6 M. Similar to fluorescence studies, the modified BH equation was applied to determine the stoichiometry, binding constant (K a ) and change in free energy (G) of the formation of AQL-Zn (II) complex. The modified BH equation [40,41] is: redox-active ligand efficiency towards analyte complexation [42,43]. RCE represents the ratio of complex stability constants of an electroactive host in its oxidized and reduced forms (K ox /K red ) as demonstrated by Beer et.…”
