Solvent crystallization of palm based dihydroxystearic acid with isopropyl alcohol: Effects of solvent quantity and concentration on particle size distribution, crystal habit and morphology, and resultant crystal purity

Abstract: Crude dihydroxystearic acid was prepared from palm based oleic acid and was then solvent purified with isopropyl alcohol in a custom fabricated simultaneous batch crystallizer unit. The crystallized dihydroxystearic acid was a functional ingredient that acted as multipurpose intermediate for synthesis of various fine chemicals, cosmetics and personal care products. The effects of solvent quantity and concentration on particle size distribution, crystal habit and morphology, and resultant crystal purity were st… Show more

“…16 Thus, by using higher concentration of hydrogen peroxide, a higher relative conversion to oxirane can be achieved. This statement is supported by a few studies that uses high concentration of hydrogen peroxide in the epoxidation process 17,18 where both used 60% hydrogen peroxide in their studies and the result shows that they can achieve a higher percentage of RCO% by using concentrated hydrogen peroxide.…”

“…Crystallization is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry as a basic and green separation and purification method. Different solvents lead to significant differences in properties such as polymorphism, purity, crystal habit, product yield, and particle size distribution of the products of the crystallization process. Solubility, as a fundamental thermodynamic data of crystallization, provides a benchmark for solvent selection during crystallization . Currently, solubility measurement methods and correlation methods are well established.…”

“…Palm-based 9,10-dihydroxystearic acid (DHSA) is highly sought as a functional material, especially in the personal care and cosmetic fields, due to its different behavior as compared with ordinary fatty acids. For example, DHSA can act as a thickener or gelling agent for oily phases in cosmetics, and a DHSA soap has higher foaming ability and detergency than a stearic acid soap. Herein, we report pH-responsive liquid marbles stabilized by DHSA, which are stable on substrates (solid and water) under acid solutions but disintegrate in a few seconds in alkaline solutions (pH > 7.5).…”
