Solution–Liquid–Solid Synthesis, Properties, and Applications of One-Dimensional Colloidal Semiconductor Nanorods and Nanowires

Abstract: The solution-liquid-solid (SLS) and related solution-based methods for the synthesis of semiconductor nanowires and nanorods are reviewed. Since its discovery in 1995, the SLS mechanism and its close variants have provided a nearly general strategy for the growth of pseudo-one-dimensional nanocrystals. The various metallic-catalyst nanoparticles employed are summarized, as are the syntheses of III-V, II-VI, IV-VI, group IV, ternary, and other nanorods and nanowires. The formation of axial heterojunctions, core… Show more

“…group III-V, II-VI, IV-VI) and ternary compounds have been synthesized. 4,[19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26] The macroscopic optoelectronic and electrochemical properties of such wire arrays have been experimentally characterized [27][28][29][30][31] , but nanoscale analyses that aim to provide a microscopic understanding of these properties have been mostly limited to theoretical and computational methodologies. [32][33][34][35] The optical excitation of photoactive semiconductor substrates immersed in a metal-ion solution can provide the driving force for deposition of a metal.…”

“…At present, the investigators are focusing numerous studies on nano semiconductor catalysts due to its exciting properties in several applications [1][2][3][4]. Goesmann et al has explained that the nano materials express smaller size, larger surface area and fascinating quantum dependent properties which are entirely different from bulk materials.…”

“…The last two decades have seen remarkable growth in the synthesis, assembly,a nd applications of finite-sized one-dimensional nanostructures (nanorods and nanowires) made of noble metals ands emiconductors. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] Comparatively few efforts have focusedo nt he synthesis of one-dimensional structures at the micron scale. [8][9][10] Recently, anew class of microstructures, silica rods, has emerged.…”
