Soluble polypyrrole copolymers

Abstract: ABSTRACT:A new class of dimethyl formamide (DMF)-and acetone-soluble conducting pyrrole-ketonic resin copolymers has been developed. This was accomplished by oxidatively polymerizing pyrrole monomer by Ce(IV) salt in the presence of methyl ethyl ketone formaldehyde resin (MEKF-R). The resulting copolymers were readily dissolved in DMF and acetone. These products were characterized by FTIR and UV-visible spectroscopy, conductivity, four-probe conductivity, viscosity, and DSC measurements.

“…The IR spectra in KBr discs of electrochemically prepared polypyrrole films with FSO 3 H and LiClO 4 are shown in Figure 2 (a) and (b). The peaks at 1,542 cm −1 are attributed to C=C stretching vibration of pyrrole 27. The peaks at 1,690 and 1,360 cm −1 indicate the presence of C=N and C–N vibrations in PPy 28.…”

“…Despite these advantages, the main drawback of PPy is its poor solubility in most common solvents which restricts its processability and makes it difficult to study optical and morphological properties of this polymer in solution phase. [28][29][30][31][32] An alternative route to enhance the solubility and processability of PPy is utilization of surfactant molecules as electrostatic stabilizers. A first approach toward increasing the solubility of PPy is to substitute pyrrole monomer at either carbon 18,19 or nitrogen 20,21 atoms and then polymerize the new derivatives into PPy.…”

“…In this case, the conducting polymer might lose some of the useful optical and electronic properties. In this study, it has been reported that the oxidative polymerisation of NVCz in polymer matrix has a conductivity value of PCzPolyethyleneglycol copolymer which is ten times lower than PCz homopolymer (Ustamehmetoglu et al, 2001a, b).…”
