Soluble L-selectin levels in serum and cerebrospinal fluid in patients with multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus erythematosus

Abstract: Soluble L-selectin (sL-selectin) concentrations were measured in paired samples of serum and cerebrospinal fluid by an ELISA method. Patients with several forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) and systemic lupus erythematosus with central nervous system involvement (SLE-CNS) were investigated. Elevated CSF sL-selectin concentrations were found in patients with SLE-CNS (7.62 +/- 3.31 ng/ml) and with relapsing-remitting form of MS (6.99 +/- 4.72 ng/ml) compared to the control group (4.00 +/- 0.95 ng/ml). The data pre… Show more

“…The increased concentration of L-selectin found in CSF in our study corresponds to other findings reported in patients with non-infectious inflammation of CNS, i.e. MS and systemic lupus erythematosus [24]. As reported previously, L-selectin is rapidly shed from the cell surface, a process that appears to be important for limiting leucocyte accumulation at the sites of inflammation [25].…”

“…L-selectin (CD62L) is a member of the selectin family of adhesion molecules expressed in leukocytes ( 52 ). Soluble L-selectin (sL-selectin) is elevated in the serum ( 53 ) and cerebrospinal fluid ( 54 ) of patients in comparison to healthy donors. Levels of sL-selectin correlate significantly with the levels of antibodies to dsDNA in patients with SLE ( 55 ).…”

“…multiple scoliosis (MS) and systemic lupus erythematosus. [24] As reported previously, L-selectin is rapidly shed from the cell surface, a process that appears to be important for limiting leukocyte accumulation at the sites of inflammation. [25] This shedding is accomplished by the cleavage of cell surface L-selectin which results in an accumulation of the soluble form of the adhesion molecule.…”
