Soluble ICAM-1 levels in small-cell lung cancer: prognostic value for survival and predictive significance for response during chemotherapy

Abstract: Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is an adhesion molecule, member of the immunoglobulin gene superfamily that seems to participate in the evolution of the metastatic process. We investigated the significance of baseline soluble ICAM-1 levels on the outcome of patients with small-cell lung cancer and whether soluble ICAM-1 is a predictive marker for objective response during and after chemotherapy in patients with small-cell lung cancer. Fifty patients with recently diagnosed small-cell lung cancer, as… Show more

“…Therefore, we speculate that high or low concentration of ICAM-1 and S-100β before treatment can predict the survival of patients. The value of ICAM-1 as a prognostic indicator was also reported by Kotteas et al (7).…”

“…At present, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and radical resection of lung cancer are the main treatments for lung cancer in clinic (6). Radical resection of lung cancer is the first choice for patients who can be treated surgically and can accept surgical risks although the risk is relatively high (7). Anesthesia is the decisive factor for the success of the operation, sevoflurane inhalation anesthesia is the commonly used anesthesia method for thoracotomy, and combined epidural anesthesia has higher hemodynamic stability (8).…”

“…ICAM-1 is a key player in the metastatic process in a number of organs, including lung, liver and blood ( Christiansen et al, 1996 ; Kotteas et al, 2013 ). It is involved in the first stage of metastasis: adhesion of tumour cells to the endothelial cell wall (in the case of the liver, adhesion of tumour cells to the surface of LSEC).…”

“…Furthermore, the soluble form, sICAM-1, enhances the pro-metastatic phenotype and the pro-inflammatory and pro-tumoral signaling (45). sICAM-1 has been demonstrated to be elevated in the serum of patients with liver metastasis from lung or gastric cancer (46,47), and has been identified as a marker for metastatic stage, disease recurrence and prognosis in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), lung cancer, and other cancer types (48)(49)(50).…”
