Solubilization and adsorption behaviors of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol in the presence of surfactants

Abstract: h i g h l i g h t sThe solubility of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol was enhanced 72 times by sodium deoxycholateat pH 7.5. NaDC demonstrated the best solubilization potential, followed by NaC, SDS and b-CD. The adsorption of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol was almost zero when NaC concentration was above CMC 2 . a r t i c l e i n f o t r a c tThe solubilization of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) was studied in the presence of four different surfactants, namely sodium deoxycholate (NaDC), sodium cholate (NaC), sodium lauryl su… Show more

“…It is well known that 2,4,6-TCP is a kind of ionizable hydrophobic organic compound. The dissociation constant (pK a ) of 2,4,6-TCP is 6.23 [20]. When the pH was lower than 6.23, 2,4,6-TCP is ionized difficultly and could be presented as the molecular form containing -OH group.…”

“…After adsorbing, the suspension was filtered with 0.22 lm organic membrane filter. The residual 2,4,6-TCP concentration was detected by UV-vis absorption spectra at 290 nm for acidic condition and at 314 nm for alkaline condition, respectively [20,39]. The amount of 2,4,6-TCP adsolubilised per unit mass of adsorbents (Q t , mg/g) at a certain time was calculated by the following equation:…”

“…Among CPs, 2,4, 4, is considered as one of the toxic pollutants because of its harmful effects [3 -5]. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has also classified it as a priority pollutant [6].Chlorophenols are poisonous and possibly cancer-causing and can influence the smell and taste of drinking water even in very low concentrations (µgL -1 ) , therefore, it is included by both the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 1977 and the European Union (EU) in their lists of priority pollutants. EU Directive 2455/2001/EC sets the most extreme 0.5 µgL -1 concentration in drinking water and individual CPs concentration must not surpass 0.1 µgL -1 .…”

“…GF are one group of non‐surface‐active materials and possess a low solubility in the aqueous solution. In order to achieve foam fractionation operation, a suitable surfactant should be selected for simultaneously playing the dual roles of solubilizer and collector. First, GF are massively dissolved in the leaching solution based on the solubilization effect of the selected surfactant.…”
