“…The partial pressures of the gases were determined by gas chromatography (Carlo Erba Model 8000, Rodano, ltaly) on a HayeSep D column (length 1.8 m, inner diameter 3.2 mm; Alltech Inc., Deerfield, Illinois, U.S.A.) at 70°C with N 2 as carrier (flow 19 ml min-1 ) and a Carlo Erba thermal conductivity detector (220°C). Concentrations of dissolved gases were calculated from Henry's law and the following Henry constants corrected for 12°C: N 2 O: 0.0374 M atm-1 (Weiss and Price, 1980) and CH 4 : 0.00177 M atm-1 (Yamamoto et al, 1976). Alkalinity was measured by potentiometric titration using Gran plots for graphical determination of the end point (Almgren et al, 1983).…”

“…At all stations, CH 4 samples were obtained in duplicate and the overall reproducibility of CH 4 concentration measurements was better than ±5%. Dissolved CH 4 concentration was calculated with the solubility coefficient of Yamamoto et al (1976). Salinity and water temperature were measured in situ using a portable thermosalinometer (WTW Cond-340) with a precision of ±0.1 and ±0.1°C, respectively.…”

“…Before sampling, the flasks were vigorously shaken for 1 min to ensure equilibrium between headspace and sediment CH 4 concentrations. Concentrations were corrected for CH 4 dissolved in the sediment interstitial water using the Bunsen Solubility Coefficient for CH 4 (Yamamoto et al, 1976), and rates calculated from the slope of the methane-time plot and headspace volume. The time courses of CH 4 concentration were linear (r 2 > 0.975) during 3-20 h after incubation start.…”
