Solubility of Benzoic Acid in Pure Solvents and Binary Mixtures

Abstract: The solubility of benzoic acid has been determined in ethanol, toluene, heptane, cyclohexane, pentane, and chloroform and in binary mixtures of ethanol + heptane and ethanol + toluene, in the temperature range of (278.15 to 323.15) K. The solubility is high in ethanol, reasonably high in chloroform, lower in toluene, and quite low in the remaining three pure solvents. In the binary mixtures the solubility of benzoic acid increases with increasing concentration of ethanol. The solubility of benzoic acid increas… Show more

“…Fig. 1 and Table 2 show that the experimental solubility values agree very well with those in the literature [23,24,26], and the largest value of the relative deviation is 6.30%. The agreement with published data suggests that the experimental method is reliable.…”

“…For each chosen supersaturation 120 mL of stock solution was made by dissolving the appropriate amount of PABA in the respective solvents (for toluene / benzoic acid this was reduced to 50mL). Solubility data for and polymorphs has been reported previously (13,16,18,19) but were re-measured in this work at 20°C for each solvent using a gravimetric method (five repeats).…”
