SOLPS modelling of ASDEX upgrade H-mode plasma

Abstract: A low density H-mode plasma has been selected for detailed inter-ELM modelling by the SOLPS code package, with the coupled treatment of its plasma (fluid code B2) and neutral (Monte-Carlo code Eirene) parts. Good quality measured midplane density and temperature profiles, covering the pedestal region and stretching far into the SOL, as well as several other parameters and profiles measured in the divertor, have enabled testing the consistency of code solutions with experiment. Once the upstream, midplane profi… Show more

“…This is consistent with the observation in ASDEX-U (Chankin et al, 2006) and DIII-D (Callen et al, 2010) that ion thermal transport is near neoclassical at the plasma boundary in deuterium Hmode plasmas, and with the general result of substantially improved particle confinement in deuterium H-modes.…”

“…In recent years, their capability to reproduce experimental observations has been questioned, particularly for plasmas with at least one of the divertor legs approaching detachment (see e.g. [4,5] and references therein). Partial divertor detachment is mandatory for achieving tolerable target power loads in a reactor.…”

“…Severe discrepancies have been observed, for example, when simulating divertor detachment [6] or SOL plasmas with medium collisionality [7]. Despite efforts made to include new physics, by introducing various mock-up models [8] or e.g.…”
