Show more

“…The selected profiles contained large amounts of S in comparison with other podzols from the literature that were reported to contain from 1.91 to 0.36% S. Enrichment of humic substances by sulfur has been observed in anoxic environments via reaction of reduced sulfur (mainly H 2 S) with organic matter that release several types of organosulfur compounds (Casagrande et al, 1977;Feldelman et al, 1991;Brüchert and Pratt, 1996;Heitmann and Blodau, 2006). The typical smell of "rotten eggs" indicated the H 2 S in the soils, and the low pH and the low Fe sesquioxide concentrations (Gomes et al, 2007b) favoured the formation and stability of H 2 S.…”

“…Three of the sandy Spodosols of Cardoso Island (a natural park in the state of Sao Paulo, southeastern region of Brazil; Fig. 1) investigated by Gomes et al (2007aGomes et al ( , 2007b were selected for this study. Horizon designations and classifications were changed according to Soil Survey Staff (2010).…”

“…The horizon sequences are given in Table 1. All profiles formed under hydromorphic conditions and are virtually Fe depleted, A description of the area, morphology of the profiles, and chemical and mineralogical data were given by Gomes et al, (2007aGomes et al, ( , 2007b. Micromorphological characteristics, the procedure used for extraction and purification of HAs, and the results of ^^C VACP/MAS NMR and FTIR spectroscopy were described in González-Pérez et al, (2008), Textures were analyzed by sieving and the pipette method (Buurman et al, 1996), Oxalate-extractable Fe and Al were also determined according to Buurman et al, (1996), Carbon and N were determined by a LECO CHN-1000 CN analyzer.…”
