Solitary fibrous tumor of the abdominal wall

Abstract: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are uncommon neoplasms of mesenchymal origin that usually arise from the pleura. SFTs of the abdominal wall are extremely rare, and only 12 cases have been reported in the English language literature. This report presents a new case of SFT of the abdominal wall in a 74-year-old female. Positron emission tomography demonstrated the heterogeneous 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake of the tumor (the maximum standardized uptake value was 2.8). Histologically, the mitotic count was 1 to 2/… Show more

“…About 20% occur in head and neck [7] , [8] , the meninges [9] , or extracranial sites such as the sinonasal tract [10] , oral cavity [11] , deep tissue of the neck, and the orbit [12] . The remaining cases can arise from the extremities [13] , the bone [14] , and from the abdominal wall [15] , [16] , [17] , [18] . SFTs that originate from the abdominal wall is extremely rare.…”

“…SFTs were initially thought to originate from mesothelial cells, but immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies have identified a mesenchymal origin [2]. Hemangiopericytoma, first described by Stout and Murray in 1942, identified a group of vascular tumors with probable origin in the pericytes of Zimmerman [5].…”

“…Positron emission tomography (PET) has shown potential to assess the degree of malignancy of these tumors, since an increase in the tracer uptake reflects an increase in intracellular glucose metabolism. More active tumors will tend to be more aggressive [2].…”

“…A female predominance has also been reported for meningeal, liver, and abdominal wall SFTs. 108-112 Progesterone and other sex hormones may play a role in the development and growth of some SFTs and may help explain the female predominance observed in renal SFTs. Identification of subsets of SFTs that are sensitive to hormonal therapy may be of interest and requires additional study.…”
