Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Skin

Abstract: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon mesenchymal tumor that typically arises in the pleural cavity. Comprised of spindled cells characteristically arranged in diverse architectural patterns, SFT histologically simulates a variety of benign and malignant mesenchymal tumors. The diagnosis of SFT has been refined by the availability of newer immunohistochemical markers such as CD-34 and factor XIIIa, facilitating the identification of SFTs arising in multiple extrapleural sites, including the skin. We desc… Show more

“…Recent papers report SFTs in the orbit [5], meninges [5], parotid and submandibular glands [6], lung [10], mediastinum [9], stomach and ileum [10], kidney [5], and skin [4,6], among other locations. SFTs are often asymptomatic, though large lesions may present with nonspecific clinical symptoms such as abdominal fullness or discomfort [8,11].…”

“…However, subsequent ultrastructural and immunohistochemical studies have shown the neoplastic cells to be fibroblastic or myofibroblastic in nature [2,3]. Cases occurring outside the pleura have been reported in virtually all organs, including soft tissues, upper respiratory tract, ovary, orbit, liver, and retroperitoneum [2,3,4,5,6,7,8].…”

“…Histologisch ähnliche Tumoren fanden sich in der Leber, der Haut und der Schilddrüse sowie nasopharyngeal und in den Meningen, sodass man von einem ubiquitären Auftreten dieser solitären fibrösen Tumoren sprechen kann [2,3,4,10,12]. Hauptsächlich sind diese Neoplasien jedoch im Thorax lokalisiert.…”

“…Additionally, ultrastructural studies further support ®broblast-like rather than mesothelial features of these cells. The occurrence of this tumor in extraserosal sites including orbit, 2 upper respiratory tract, 1 nasopharyngeal sinuses, 3 periosteum, 4 soft tissues, 5 skin, 6 prostate, 7 meninges, 8 spinal cord, 9 ± 13 epiglottis, 14 liver, 15 and thyroid 16 suggest that a solitary ®brous tumor has a mesenchymal origin.…”
