Solitary Bone Cyst of the Radius Containing Liesegang’s Rings

Abstract: The authors describe the case of a 33-year-old man with a solitary cystic lesion of the left distal radius with central radiodensities that radiographically suggested a chondroid matrix. Curettage of the lesion revealed numerous calcospherites with a lamellar structure. This lamellar pattern is thought to be a result of alternating precipitation and diffusion of supersaturated solutions. This biochemical process has been called the Liesegang's phenomenon, and the structures have been termed Liesegang's rings. … Show more

“…[2][3][4]9,12,[27][28][29]32,33,36 On immunohistochemistry there is no reliable marker for diagnosis of LR, but in some cases LR have contained calcium, hemosiderin, glycogen, acid mucopolysaccharide, and amyloid. 2,5,9,12,28,29,32,34,35 In conclusion, the present study describes a unique and previously unrecognized lesion showing the occurrence of LR deposition in the hepatobiliary tracts, which further formed a grossly visible mass resembling a hepatic tumor. To our knowledge this is the first report of LR affecting the biliary tracts.…”

“…To study the organs in which LR can be formed, we reviewed the English‐language literature regarding LR in a PubMed search encompassing the years 1987–2008. The results are summarized in Table 1 2–19,27–36 . As described here, LR were frequently seen in the kidney ( n = 25) and breast ( n = 22), followed by synovium ( n = 8), female genital tract ( n = 8), and eyelid and conjunctiva ( n = 4).…”

“…2,9 The reported case of Liesegang rings in a solitary bone cyst demonstrated positive staining for calcium with alizarin red. 4 One case also contained nonbirefringent calcium oxalate-like crystals. 1 In 3 cases, the structures were slightly birefringent (kidney, conjunctiva, and pleura).…”
