Solidification of High-Pressure Medium Daphne 7373

Abstract: The solidification pressure of Daphne 7373, which is widely used as a pressure medium in high pressure studies, was examined at room temperature. Using a new generation clamp-type pressure cell, we found that Daphne 7373 solidifies at 2.2 GPa at room temperature. This is exactly on the natural extrapolation of the melting curve obtained at lower pressures and temperatures in our previous report. The solidification pressure of Daphne 7373 is twice as high as that of another well-known medium Fluorinert 77/70 (0… Show more

“…The double layered cylindrical pressure cell and pressure exchange medium Daphne 7373 oil [10] were used for the measurement up to 3 GPa in temperature range 4300 K. The manganin wire was used as the pressure sensor. The pressure was determined at room temperature with an error of 0.05 GPa and with higher uncertainty (≈ 0.2 GPa) above 2.2 GPa and below 1 GPa because of the solidication of Daphne 7373 oil [10].…”

“…there is a maximum pressure above which they solidify. Daphne 7373 [21] which can yield a hydrostatic pressure up to 2.5 GPa at room temperature is a better choice than Fluorinert which solidifies at around ∼ 0.55 -0.9 GPa [22]. Although isopentane has a higher limit to the hydrostatic pressure (∼ 3 GPa) [23], it causes serious damage to samples due to a discontinuous pressure drop associated with solidification on cooling [21].…”

“…3) A characteristic feature in β-US 2 is the strong response of an electrical conductivity to external fields such as magnetic field and pressure. When magnetic field is applied along the magnetic easy axis (the [001] direction) at 2 K, the electrical resistivity decreases from 10 6 Ω·cm under 0 T to 6 Ω·cm under 7 T, indicating a large and negative magnetoresistance. The magnitude of the magnetoresistance is in the same order as those observed in perovskite-type manganese oxide compounds or magnetic multilayers.…”
