Zero Waste Management is a program that aimed to promote recycling and proper waste segregation among teachers, learners, parents, and other stakeholders who are considered to be responsible in the effort to protect and manage the school environment through good school governance to support sustainable development. School principals as the leader in school should be able to play an active and maximal role in the effort to create a zero-waste school. This study is aimed to find out the role of the school principal and the extent of this role in the implementation of Zero Waste Management projects. The study also can be used in other school projects amidst the existence of pandemic. This study used qualitative and quantitative methods in data collection. The investigation was done in Crisanto Guysako Memorial Elementary School of Nagcarlan, Laguna involving thirty (30) respondents that include learners, teachers, parents, and members of the community. The result of the study showed that strong agreement among the respondents was shown in the determination of the vital role of the school head in the sustainability of zero waste management program in terms of effect, empowerment, and economics. Furthermore, the results indicated that the extent of the role of school principal based on the interviews conducted on the implementation of the projects is to formulate environmental school policy; to develop eco-friendly school culture, and to ensure the sustainability of the program through the support of its stakeholders.Through the leadership of school heads, environmental awareness through orientation, assembly, and capacity building among school's stakeholders, with emphasis on issues regarding solid waste management and recycling, to encourage students and the general public to becoming environmentally responsible citizens, and to expand the knowledge and attitude towards improved practices on solid waste management.

This study attempts to assess the extent of implementation and integration of solid waste management indicators in public and private schools in General Santos in terms of waste reuse, waste reduction, waste collection, waste recycling, waste treatment, final waste disposal, and IEC advocacy/campaign. A modified questionnaire was given to the respondents which were composed of Senior High School students, Science teachers, and school administrators of one (1) private and public school. The comparative result of implementation and integration between the public and private schools revealed that both schools implement and integrate the policy on solid waste management to a great extent with a composite mean of 3.55 and 3.42 respectively. T-test result on the extent of the implementation and integration of Solid Waste Management between the two selected big schools in General Santos City showed no significant difference with a t-value of 1.03941and the p-value of 0.319106 which is less than 0.05 (p<.05). This justifies that the two public and private schools in General Santos City implements and integrates Solid Waste Management to a great extent. It is imperative, therefore, for the schools to continue prioritizing the programs and advocacies on solid waste management. The school administrators must also maintain high standards of integrating SWM in the learning process through campaigns, incentives, partnerships, organizational resources, and equity.

Open disposal is the most common technique used for municipal solid waste (MSW) management due to the absence of sanitary landfills in Pakistan. The major cities and small towns in Pakistan have become a showcase of negligence and mismanagement of MSW, which results in deterioration of the environmental and social-life quality. Moreover, research has proved that inefficient handling (disposal) of MSW results in uncontrolled emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs), mainly methane, and adds a significant share in global climate change. This study aims to estimate methane emissions from MSW disposed of at dumpsites and compare the GHG mitigation potential of different landfill strategies in specific climate and waste compositions in Karachi. The GHG estimations are based on lab-scale investigations conducted by simulating landfill conditions through the landfill simulation reactor (LSR) experiment. The synthetic MSW sample representing the composition of MSW generated in Karachi was used in the LSR experiment. Environmental sustainability and GHG mitigation potential of different landfilling strategies was evaluated by analyzing gas formation potential (GP21) and respiration activity (RI4) at the end of the experiment. This study revealed that the quantity of solid waste annually disposed of at dumpsites in Karachi possesses the potential to release about 3.9 Mt CO2-eq. methane (with specific methane potential of 1.8 tCO2-eq./tonne DM disposed) due to the biological decomposition of the organic fraction. Results show that the fresh waste disposed of at landfill sites in Karachi possesses about 92% and 94% higher GP21 and RI4, respectively, than the German allocated criteria for mechanically and biologically treated (MBT) waste for landfills Furthermore, sanitary landfills with post-aeration conditions showed higher GHG mitigation potential and low biological activity in the waste. The second highest GHG mitigation potential and lowest biological activity of the waste was noticed from bioreactor landfills with post-aeration conditions. The third number in GHG mitigation and reduced waste activity was noticed in the waste sampled from bioreactors without aftercare approach. The least GHG mitigation potential was noticed from the uncontrolled waste dumping (existing) approach with high residual gas potential and respiration index level. This lab-scale landfill simulation study can provide baseline data for further research and planning the development of new sustainable landfills in Karachi, Pakistan and in the region.
