Solid‐state synthesis and characterization of cobalt blue core‐shell pigment particles

Abstract: Cobalt blue is one of the most chemically and thermally stable blue pigments. However, cobalt is scarce and expensive. To minimize the use of cobalt and reduce production costs and toxicity, cobalt blue core‐shell pigments were synthesized by a solid‐state method, which is cheaper than a liquid‐phase reaction. Small cobalt hydroxide particles and large α‐alumina particles, in various ratios, were used as the starting materials. The dry mixed powders were calcined at 1200°C for 2 hours. Elemental mappings of th… Show more

“…Resultant products exhibit inconsistent microstructure, grain growth, faulty sintering behavior, and unrestricted cation stoichiometry [92,116,117]. The mixture of barium carbonate and iron oxide is fired at extremely high temperatures (1200-1300°C), the resulting powder is grounded, which causes the contamination and stains in crystal lattices that affect the magnetic behavior of prepared samples [118,119].…”

“…For example, cobalt oxide, cobalt hydroxide or others as a source of cobalt and aluminium oxide as a source of aluminium are used. The precursors are mixed in a stoichiometric amount followed by heat treatment at a minimum temperature of >1200 ° C, affording cobalt aluminate [15][16][17]. This 3 method can be easily implemented and does not require a considerable amount of reagents.…”

“…Methods of synthesis for cobalt blue are also changing, notably to reduce the expensive and toxic cobalt while maintaining an intense blue colour (Tang et al, 2017;Yoneda et al, 2018).…”
