Abstract-This article presents the optical design of a six-spectral LED-based solar simulator. The study focuses on the measurement methods of spectral match, the non-uniformity and the temporal instability on the test plane. The proposed six-spectral LED solar simulator has an illuminated area of 900 cm 2 and can characterize medium size photovoltaic devices under variable irradiance. The spectral range covered is between 400 nm and 1100 nm which offer the capability of characterizing silicon PV technologies. The evaluation method is in accordance with IEC 60904-9. The Solar Power meter was used to measure the irradiance and a Compact Array Spectrometer and Fiber optic spectrometer were applied for the spectral match test. The irradiance is controlled via LabVIEW which can adjust the power to drive all LEDs in the constant current mode. The irradiance of 1000 W/m 2 was applied during testing. The results found that the spectral match classification is of class B. The non-uniformity of irradiance is of A-class across the illuminated area. The temporal instability of irradiance is capable of reaching class A. This idea is perfectly appropriate for the application of the testing of I-V characteristic of the silicon solar cell. For future work, the author has to improve the spectral match to reach an A Class.

This paper proposes a configuration of a low cost solar module simulator (SAS), suitable for basic studies on PV systems. The utilizes the halogen tungsten bulbs as the light source. Furthermore, water tank is placed in between the bulbs and the PV module to control the rise in temperature. The halogen tungsten bulb is powered by DC voltage rectified from a three phase supply. Its light intensity is control by IGBT using high frequency switching. The SAS is capable of generating 1000W/m 2 of irradiation. During the experiment the PV modules temperature dropped about half to 53 o C after using water filters in 15 minutes exposure to the 1000W/m 2 irradiation. To test the capability of the SAS, a case study involving PV system under partial shading is carried out.

Attempts to improve solar cells efficiency touch all its constituents and are directly related to their fabrication protocols. While the most promising material platform for high efficiency photovoltaic devices is still III‐V semiconductors, introduction of novel materials like single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), which are characterized by unique combination of conductivity and transparency, might greatly yield the device performance. Here, for the first time, we present the results of the fabrication and characterization of a thin‐film GaAs solar cell with a SWCNT top contact. We examine the contact between the SWCNT film and the semiconductor structure by means of the optical and electron beam‐induced current techniques. The fabricated device demonstrates better performance, that is, increased power conversion efficiency from 10.6% to 11.5% when compared to the cell with the traditional metal contact grid, stemming from the enhanced photocurrent collection efficiency and low parasitic light absorption in the emitter layer. We envision future prospects to exploit the multifunctionality of the SWCNTs in fabrication of highly efficient photovoltaic devices including flexible solar cells.
