Solar photo-oxidation of recalcitrant industrial wastewater: a review

Abstract: Conventional methods to clean wastewater actually lead to incomplete treatments, calling for advanced technologies to degrade recalcitrant pollutants. Herein we review solar photo-oxidation to degrade the recalcitrant contaminants in industrial wastewater, with focus on photocatalysts, reactor design and the photo-Fenton process. We discuss limitations due to low visible-light absorption, catalyst collection and reusability, and production of toxic by-products. Photodegradation of refractory organics by solar … Show more

“…The most effective way to reduce pollution is to treat wastewater at the pollution’s source; however, most industries and aquacultures lack on-site treatment technologies (Wang et al 2020a ). In most cases, chemical, physical, and biological methods are used to treat wastewater (Tawfik et al 2022a ). Biological processes are superior to other treatment methods due to their straightforward operation, low cost, and eco-friendliness.…”

“…Among the advanced oxidation processes mentioned above, solar photo-oxidation is recently considered a promising way of degrading recalcitrant pollutants in industrial wastewater. Solar energy-based water treatment processes are regarded as a sustainable way of pollutant remediation with promising potential [21]. Recently, photocatalytic degradation has been employed for the removal of recalcitrant water contaminants such as norfloxacin [23], ampicillin [24], and methylene blue dye [25] and showed promising efficiency.…”

“…8,9 Due to pesticides' hazards, the researchers' motivation has been to develop low-cost, environmentally friendly, and effective techniques for treating industrial effluents containing bio-resistant pollutants (e.g., pesticides). 10 Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been widely recognized for decomposing bio-resistant micropollutants. [11][12][13] The degradation of bio-resistant contaminants via AOPs is primarily based on the production of unselective radicals (e.g., hydroxyl radicals).…”
