Bioactive glass-ceramic powder in SiO 2 -CaONa 2 O-P 2 O 5 system was successfully synthesised through a modified sol-gel route. The gel was prepared using tetraethyl orthosilicate, calcium nitrate, sodium nitrate and triethyl phosphate raw materials. The gel was calcined in the temperature range 700-1050°C to get the glass-ceramic powder. Dissolution of the glass-ceramic powder was studied by in vitro immersion in Tris buffer solution for various period of time. The biodegraded powder was analyzed using XRD. The sintered glass-ceramic was characterized for in vitro bioactivity in simulated body fluid, and the incubated pellet was then analyzed for phase identification by XRD, surface morphology using SEM and elemental analysis using energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. The biocompatibility of the glass-ceramics was evaluated through MTT assay using MG-63 cells. Graphical Abstract

Effect of calcium phosphate addition on sintering of El-Oued sand quartz raw materials

This work addresses the development of an eventual low cost ceramic insulating or microfiltration membrane supports from inexpensive raw materials such Eloued quartz sand (EQS) and calcium phosphate (CP) using uniaxially dry compaction method. The prepared samples were sintered at different temperatures ranging between 1200 and 1550 °C. Subsequently, the effects of sintering temperature and amount of CP on samples proprieties were investigated. It is observed that X-ray diffracion measurements confirmed that EQS was transformed into cristobalite and tridymite phases when both sintering temperature and holding time were increased. This transformation is favored with increasing amount of CP, it is observed also formation of CaSiO 3 and Ca(Fe)(Al) PO 4 . The SEM images of the samples sintered at different temperatures illustrate that silica grains, CP grains, intergranular phase contents (Si, Ca, P, and O) and an important open porosity depend on the sintering temperature. The porosity ratio changes in the range between 37% and 34% according to sintering temperature and to CP content; these values are in good agreement with SEM images. The thermal expansion behavior shows a weak expansion in the range of temperature between 600 and 1000 °C which is situated between 1.27% and 1.33% (variation of 0.05% at 400 °C).

Abstract45S5 bioactive glass powders with the following composition: 45 wt% SiO2, 6 wt% P2O5, 24.5 wt% CaO and 24.5 wt% Na2O were melted and quenched in water to obtain a frit. The frit was milled using two different routes: dry milling followed by sieving to obtain glass particles, and wet milling followed by spray drying to obtain a powder comprising porous agglomerates. All feedstocks showed adequate characteristics that make them suitable to be deposited by atmospheric plasma spraying. The powders and coatings were characterised by field-emission gun environmental scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. The roughness and the contact angle of the coatings were also determined. The bioactivity of the powders and coatings was assessed by immersion in Simulated Body Fluid. It was found that bioactive glass prepared from bioglass frit by dry milling exhibited similar bioactivity as that of a commercial bioactive glass. All coatings produced showed good adhesion to the substrate as well as suitable surface properties to ensure efficient contact with body fluid. Regardless the characteristics of the feedstocks or plasma spray conditions used, all coatings were exclusively made up of an amorphous phase. On the other hand micrographs revealed that the characteristics of the feedstock strongly impact on the final coating microstructure. The most homogeneous microstructure was obtained when the feedstock was prepared by fine dry grinding of the frit. For this coating the formation of a bioactive layer was also proved by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction.
