Sol-gel-Derived $\hbox{Al}_{2}\hbox{O}_{3}{-} \hbox{SiO}_{2}$ Composite Coating for Electrical Insulation in HTS Magnet Technology

Abstract: Electrically insulating Al 2 O 3 −SiO 2 thin coatings have been deposited on long-length 316 stainless steel (SS) tape using a reel-to-reel continuous solgel dip coating process for cowinding insulation into YBCO pancake coils, a hightemperature superconductor magnet technology. Coatings with a thickness of ∼5 μm are achieved after just two dips with a tape withdrawal speed of ∼8 mm/s (0.5 m/min) and a calcination at 700 • C. The coatings are measured to have a room-temperature breakdown voltage of ∼200 V, cor… Show more

“…where E b is the dielectric strength, d is the coating thickness and is a power factor, varying 0.23 to 0.66 for most ceramic insulators [15,28,29,41,42]. A linear regression analysis of the dielectric strength data (Figure 8) gave an value of 0.24, consistent with the findings of Singh [34] for MgO thin films.…”

“…Dip coating has been employed by many researchers to apply ceramic coatings to metallic substrates [12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. A variety of parameters can affect the state of the coatings and resulting properties of the coatings; these include the viscosity of starting suspension and dipping times.…”

“…We investigated sol-gel based ZrO 2 and Al 2 O 3 coatings through collaboration with Harran University, Turkey [26][27][28][29]. Sol-gel technology is widely used and advantageous for its ease of application and potential low cost [30]. However, a persistent lack of adhesion on Ag and the need for multiple dips to build up a thick enough insulation for Bi-2212/Ag RW makes us, presently at least, doubt this sol-gel approach is viable for long length coating.…”

“…Such coatings should exhibit good adhesion and insulation properties to meet the requirements of equipment for components. The heat resistance and heat dissipation of coating material, furthermore, is considered to pose a great deal of help to the use of electrical steel due to overheating issues at high voltage [6,7].…”
