Thirty cultivars and experimental strains of winter barley (Hordeum vulgare) were grown on acid, aluminum‐toxic soils treated with two rates of lime in greenhouse tests and three rates in field tests. The objectives were to determine if greenhouse tests could be used for certain phases of breeding for Al‐tolerant barley varieties and to find possible new sources of Al‐tolerant germ plasm. Dry‐weight yields of top and root growth were determined after 7 weeks in the greenhouse. Grain yields were determined from field plots. Correlation coefficients between root and top yields in the greenhouse were 0.93 for the low lime rate and 0.71 for the high rate. Root and top yields at the low lime rate in the greenhouse were highly correlated with grain yield in the field with no lime added (r = 0.77 and 0.66, respectively) but there was no significant correlation between the same measurements at the high lime levels. Results of these studies indicate that plant populations of barley can be initially screened for Al tolerance in pots of Al‐toxic soil in a greenhouse. Al tolerance is apparently genetically controlled. Experimental lines derived from backcrossing to A1‐tolerant parents were also tolerant. Selection for A1 tolerance in a mixed population on acid, A1‐toxic soil in the field was demonstrated.

AbstractmRadial growth responses to drought were examined in the tree-ring records of six species growing within two locations of differing land-use history and soil moisture characteristics, and in overstory and understory canopy positions in northern Virginia. Tree species experienced differential ring-width reductions during or immediately following four severe drought periods occurring from 1930 to 1965 and were influenced by climatic variables including annual and summer temperatures, annual precipitation, and annual Palmer Drought Severity Index. Relative growth comparisons averaged across species before and after drought years indicated that understory trees on drymesic sites grew 11% faster after drought compared to predrought rates while mesic site trees in both canopy positions grew approximately 4% slower. Superposed epoch analysis indicated that Liriodendron tulipifera growing on mesic sites experienced greater ring-width reductions associated with drought than co-occurring, more drought-tolerant Quercus alba and Q. velutina. On dry-mesic sites, L. tulipifera also experienced greatly reduced growth as a result of drought but exhibited significant growth increases following individual drought events. Quercus alba was the only species that exhibited a consistent, significant ringwidth decrease associated with all droughts on dry-mesic sites. In contrast, Pinus virginiana was least impacted by drought on dry-mesic sites but was much more impacted by drought on mesic sites, indicating a drought × site interaction for this species. Overstory Carya glabra and Q. alba experienced larger growth decreases during drought on drymesic versus mesic sites. Understory tree growth reductions did not differ between site types but were often significantly larger than overstory responses of the same species on mesic sites. Following drought, most trees exhibited growth reductions lasting 2-3 years, although several species experienced reductions lasting up to 6 years. The results of this study suggest that tree rings represent an important long-term proxy for leaf-level ecophysiological measurements of growth responses to drought periods.

RESUMOObjetivou-se analisar o estádio de evolução do relevo e da erosão em quinze bacias hidrográficas de terceira ordem de ramificação, localizadas no Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar, em Cubatão (SP). Utilizaram-se técnicas de análise do relevo por meio de integrais hipsométricas, integrais volumétricas, relação de material erodido e razão de relevo, para prognosticar o desencadeamento de processos erosivos. Concluiu-se que as bacias hidrográficas situadas em diferentes regiões fisiográficas apresentam maior predisposição à instabilidade das encostas quanto maiores forem os valores da razão de relevo, e que as aná-lises conjunta e comparativa dos valores, posição de concavidade e convexidade das curvas hipsométricas e valores de relação de material erodido (removido das bacias) fornecem indicação do grau de evolução do relevo e da suscetibilidade à erosão dos solos das bacias.Termos de indexação: relevo, solos, material erodido, bacia hidrográfica.
