Soil Seed Bank in Pantanal Riparian Forest: Persistence, Abundance, Functional Diversity and Composition

Abstract: The soil seed bank is a regeneration strategy for most plant species in wetlands such as the Pantanal. Soil depth is an indicator of seed bank persistence. Therefore, our objective was to assess the species composition potentially persistent in the soil seed bank, and verify the effect of depth on seed bank abundance, diversity and functional composition. We collected 40 samples (10 x 10 x 5 cm) at four depths: 0-5, 5-10, 10-15 and 15-20 cm, in ten areas along the Paraguay River (N = 10/depth). We placed the s… Show more

“…Considering these main drivers, we can say that vegetation of Pantanal can change over the year, with germination of aquatic plants from the seed bank during the flooded season and the germination of terrestrial species during the dry season (Bao et al 2018;Souza et al 2019). It can also change across the years with the pluriannual cycles of dry and wet years when certain types of vegetation can move in the landscape toward where the cycle is favorable.…”

“…Abundant seed production [14] and herbicide resistance facilitate invasion and hinder management in agricultural areas. Invasion by U. panicoides has already been reported in Pakistan [17], Mexico [18], and Brazil [19].…”
