Food production in Nigeria is almost entirely rain fed despite the great potential of irrigation in Nigeria to boost agricultural productivity. The study assessed the profitability and efficiency of dry season irrigated okra farming in Adamawa State using primary data collected from 180 farmers through a simple random sampling technique. Profit efficiency and stochastic frontier function were used in analyzing the data. The result revealed that labor costs accounted for 48% of average variable cost while a farmer’s total revenue from irrigated okra produce was ₦228,642.56K ($408.2), total fixed cost and variable input cost was ₦102,440.37K ($182.93), resulting in a net farm income (NFI) of ₦126,201.63K ($225.36). The coefficients of farm size, household size, and fertilizer were positive and significant at the 1%, 10%, and 5% levels of probability, respectively, as revealed by the OLS results. Empirical estimate shows that the mean technical efficiency value of vegetable farmers was about 0.73 while Technical inefficiency coefficient of farming experience (−0.420), adjusted household size (−0.193), and extension contacts (−0.162) are variables that increased technical efficiency. Lack of access to water, high cost of equipment, and inadequate finance were identified as lead constraints of the okra farmers. Therefore, recommendations by the study are that farmers be encouraged to establish cooperative organizations so that they can pool their resources to create an irrigation system that is affordable. Also, sustainability of small scale irrigation scheme should be promoted by the government through skill enhanced trainings.

Semi-detail soil survey and land suitability evaluation for sugarcane production was carried out in Zagga, Bagudo LGA of Kebbi State Nigeria at scale of 1:25,000 on 8,000 ha of land. The objectives were to describe the morphological and chemical properties of the soils. The entire study area was classified in to five soil units named as ZG1, ZG2, ZG3, ZG4, and ZG5. Surface soil samples were examined and collected from 0-15cm, 15-30cm depth using soil auger at 200x200m interval. Five soil profile pits were dug, described and soils sampled from bottom up, to minimized contamination by falling debris. Each soil profile pit was described based on horizon thickness, depth, colour of matrix and mottles, consistency, included materials, roots, horizon boundary, vegetation/ land use, slope, depth to water table and drainage status. The soils are slightly acidic (6.30) to moderately acidic (5.60). The total nitrogen, organic carbon, available phosphorus, and basic cations (Ca, Mg, K, Na) were low to moderately low according to guidelines for nutrient rating and interpretation for Nigerian soils. The soils were moderately drained. According to USDA soil taxonomy classification the soils of ZG 1 and ZG 2 were classified as Dystrustepts while ZG 3, ZG 4 and ZG 5 were classified as Haplustepts and correlated with World Reference Based System as Arenosols and Luvisols. ZG1 and ZG2 were named as moderately suitable (S2) while ZG3, ZG4 and ZG5 were marginally suitable (S3) according to the guidelines of land suitability evaluation for sugarcane production.

Aims: Soil quality assessment is valuable for agricultural production. In this study, 150 soil samples at 0-15 and 15-30 cm depths were collected from Kaipad land (Agroecological unit 7) of Kerala to assess the quality and nutrient index. Study Design: Survey, collection of sample and principal component analysis. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, College of Agriculture, Vellayani between 2020 and 2021. Methodology: Soil samples were collected from AEU 7 and analyzed for physical, chemical and biological indicators for evaluating soil quality. Principal component analysis (PCA) was carried out with 13 soil parameters which resulted in 6 principal components and a minimum data set (MDS) of nine parameters (pH, EC, organic carbon, available N, Mg, K, B, P and Zn) with eigen values greater than 1, which were used for computing soil quality index. Nutrient index was computed for organic carbon, available N, P and K. Thematic maps on SQI and NI were prepared using geographical information system (GIS). Results: The results revealed that the Kaipad soils (AEU 9) are sandy clay loam in texture, extreme to strong acid condition (pH 3.5- 5.0), high in organic carbon, low in available N and K, medium in available P, deficient in available Ca, Mg and B. Majority (88%) of the soils are rated medium in soil quality. Relative soil quality index ranged between 47.5 and 76.3 per cent in the Kaipad soils with a mean of 61.0 per cent. Conclusion: The soils of Kaipad (AEU 7) under different agricultural land uses experiences various constraints to crop production like extremely acidic pH, high electrical conductivity, . nutrient deficiencies of N, K, Ca, Mg, B and toxicities of Fe and Al. Examining the relationships of soil parameters by principal component analysis indicated that nine soil parameters such as pH, EC, organic carbon, available N, Mg, K, P, Zn and B have significantly contributed to soil quality index, which are the important key indicators of soil quality. The soil quality index was medium for Kaipad soil. Nutrient index was high for organic carbon, low for available N, medium for available P and low for available K.
