Tomographic image quality in soil physics applications is extremely dependent on calibration. Here, good calibrations of the system are necessary to avoid errors during soil evaluations by computed tomography (CT), which can hamper interpretations of physical parameters of the soil. In order to analyze the relevance of a good calibration curve (CC) for measurements of soil physical properties, determinations of soil bulk density (ρ b ) were obtained using four different CCs established for a homemade CT scanner dedicated especially to soil physics. The calibrations of the system were obtained through the relationship between tomographic units and corresponding linear attenuation coefficients (μ 1 ) of different materials. Data show that different calibration curves produce distinct ρ b values affecting the quality of results of this soil physical property when evaluated by CT. However, it was demonstrated that even using non-homogeneous materials for CT calibration the results of ρ b practically are of the same order of magnitude of the whole system error estimated in 0.05 g cm −3 (taking the water as reference).

Gamma ray attenuation Neutron radiationMoisture-density gauge a b s t r a c tThe properties of soil in Kirkuk city (IRAQ) are studied using gamma and neutron radiation.Ten locations are selected for the process of making field measurements on soils at 40 e50 cm depth levels then the samples were collected to be studied in the laboratory also. In the field, we measured the density and moisture contents of soils. The laboratory measurement has been performed to obtain mass attenuation coefficients, using gamma spectrometer contains shielded NaI (Tl) detector at the energies of 59.5, 356.5, 662, 1173 and 1332 keV. The obtained results were presented and discussed. The study has practical importance to know the nature of the soil in the oil and agricultural city Kirkuk.

resumoPeças sinterizadas porosas para uso como meio de filtragem foram produzidas a partir de pós de vidro oriundo de material reciclado. O processamento seguiu o princípio de preenchimento, no qual sal (NaCl) foi adicionado como fase não sinterizável, solúvel, com o objetivo de controle dos tamanhos de poros e da porosidade. Detalhes da moagem e características dos pós processados são apresentados. A microestrutura das membranas sinterizadas e lixiviadas foi caracterizada por microscopia eletrônica de varredura e porosimetria de mercúrio. Os resultados indicam dependência entre a fração de sal adicionada e a microestrutura. Poros resultantes da solubilização do sal são identificados por apresentarem formatos preferencialmente regulares, diferindo dos demais. Análises de permeabilidade por queda de pressão demonstram a possibilidade de operação em microfiltração para diferentes intervalos de tamanho de poros.
