Anthropogenic forest disturbance and land use change (LUC) in the Amazon region is the main source of greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere in Brazil, due to the carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) emitted from vegetation clearance. Land use conversion associated with management practices plays a key role in the distribution and origin of C in different soil organic matter (SOM) fractions. Here, we show how changing land use systems have influenced soil C and N stocks, SOM physical fractions, and the origin of SOM in the Santarém region of the eastern Brazilian Amazon. Soil C and N stocks were calculated for the surface layer of 0-30 cm. Anthropogenic disturbances to the standing forest, such as selective logging and wildfires, led to significant declines in soil C and N stocks. However, in the long-term, the conversion of the Amazon forest to pasture did not have a noticeable effect on soil C and N stocks, presumably because of additional inputs from pasture grasses. However, the conversion to cropland did lead to reductions in soil C and N content. According to the physical fractionation of SOM, LUC altered SOM quality, but silt and clay remained the combined fraction that contributed the most to soil C storage. Our results emphasize the importance of implementing more sustainable forest management systems, whilst also calling further attention to the need for fire monitoring systems, helping to ensure the resilience of C and N stocks and sequestration in forest soils; thereby contributing towards urgently needed ongoing efforts to mitigate climate change.

RESUMOO objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as modificações nos estoques de carbono, resíduos vegetais da superfície do solo (RVS) e em alguns atributos físicos do solo, tais como densidade do solo (Ds), densidade das partículas (Dp) e volume total de poros (VTP) em diferentes sistemas de manejo, no cerrado goiano; para isto foram selecionados no sudoeste do estado de Goiás, quatro diferentes tipos de manejo, a saber: sistema plantio direto (SPD) com integração lavoura-pecuária (ILP), SPD sem ILP e áreas de Cerrado natural (CN) e pastagem (PA); em cada uma das áreas foram coletadas amostras nas profundidades de 0-5; 5-10 e 10-20 cm; o delineamento utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado; o tratamento com CN apresentou, em todas as profundidades analisadas (0 a 20 cm) menores valores de Ds, e o maior VTP, do que as demais tratamentos avaliados. Dentre os sistemas manejados a área de ILP e o SPD apresentaram menores Ds que a PA na camada superficial do solo, no entanto, não houve diferença entre esses sistemas de manejo para a Dp e VTP. For this, in the southwestern part of Goiás state four different types of management were selected, namely: no-tillage (NT) with crop-livestock integration (ILP), NT without ILP and natural areas of 'Cerrado' (CN) and pasture (PA ). In each area, soil samples were collected in 0-5, 5-10 and 10-20 cm depths. The experimental design was completely randomized. Treatment with CN presented in all depths studied (0 to 20 cm) lower values of Ds and the VTP higher than other treatments. Among the management systems, the area of ILP and NT had lower Ds than the PA in the topsoil, however, there was no difference between these management systems for Dp and VTP. The area of CN presented EstC similar to the RVS and NT and ILP in the topsoil, while the ILP presented EstC similar to NC area in 10-20 cm.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is usually said to be well correlated with soil texture and soil aggregation. These relations generally suggest a physical and physicochemical protection of SOC within soil aggregates and on soil fi ne particles, respectively. Because there are few experimental evidences of these relations on tropical soils, we tested the relations of soil variables (SOC and soil aggregate contents, and soil texture) with the amount of SOC physically protected in aggregates on a set of 15 Malagasy soils. The soil texture, the SOC and water stable macroaggregate (MA) contents and the amount of SOC physically protected inside aggregates, calculated as the difference of C mineralized by crushed and intact aggregates, were characterized. The relation between these variables was established. SOC content was signifi cantly correlated with soil texture (clay+fi ne silt fraction) and with soil MA amount while protected SOC content was not correlated with soil MA amount. This lack of correlation might be attributed to the highest importance of physicochemical protection of SOC which is demonstrated by the positive relation between SOC and clay+fi ne silt fraction.
