Software testing of mobile applications: Challenges and future research directions

Abstract: While mobile applications are becoming so extraordinarily adopted, it is still unclear if they deserve any specific testing approach for their verification and validation. This paper wants to investigate new research directions on mobile applications testing automation, by answering three research questions: (RQ1) are mobile applications (so) different from traditional ones, so to require different and specialized new testing techniques?, (RQ2) what are the new challenges and research directions on testing mob… Show more

“…The key reason was found by Palit et al [24] and established that newer software engineering approaches are required to test the mobile apps. This was further verified in the work by Muccini et al [23], which showed that mobile apps are different from traditional ones, and require different and specialized new testing techniques. They further suggested that the key challenges are related to the contextual and always-mobile nature of mobile apps, such as sensed data provided by context providers, diversity of phone and phone makers and Graphical User Interface.…”

“…A lot of work is done in this area and a lot more to go, if we emphasize on software testing of mobile applications, Muccini [16] discussed that earlier traditional approach was followed. Now a day's automated testing is playing a vital role to test mobile applications to overcome the challenges as it is different from desktop testing.…”

“…This brings new business requirements and demands in mobile software testing, and causes new issues and challenges in mobile testing and automation. Mobile Application testing refers to testing activities for native and web applications on mobile devices using well-defined software test methods and tools to ensure quality in functions, behaviors, performance, quality of service and features like mobility, usability, inter-operation ability, connectivity, security and privacy [10] [22]. Most of the present research work focuses on providing solutions to the technical problems on mobile app white-box testing methods, GUI-based test technique, and ad-hoc scripting test tools; GUI ripping has become an effective technology in GUI test automation.…”
