Software for simulating dichromatic perception of video streams

Abstract: We have designed a configurable stand-alone Matlab-based software to simulate dichromatic perception of video streams. The algorithm used is an extension for video streams of the "corresponding pair algorithm" by Capilla and coworkers for simulation of dichromatic perception of images. The software allows the user to upload a video sequence and to process it using different dichromatic color vision models and viewing conditions. The output video may be generated in different spatial and temporal resolutions an… Show more

“…It is important to note other algorithms exist for simulating CVD and colorblindness [ 27 , 28 ], including the “corresponding pair algorithm,” which can account for different viewing conditions [ 29 , 30 ]. We found the model [ 26 ] used here is the best for our purposes since it is not limited to dichromatic vision simulation.…”

“…Most of the times, color transformation is done using some kind of software (Capilla, Díez-Ajenjo, Luque, & Malo, 2004;Luque, Fez, & Acevedo, 2014;Viénot, Brettel, & Mollon, 1999). Alternatively, optic filtering can be used (http://www.variantor.co.uk/page.…”

“…For this reason, their applicability does not go beyond curiosity driven self-testing. Algorithms simulating dichromatic color perception have also been developed, to illustrate the kind of color-coded information losses and the difficulties for object detection suffered by dichromatic subjects 18,[24][25][26][27] . Different more or less successful algorithms have also been proposed to modify the color palette of an image in order to allow dichromatic subjects to perceive them with minimum information loss 28,29 .…”
