Software Defined Monitoring of application protocols

Abstract: Current high-speed network monitoring systems focus more and more on the data from the application layers. Flow data is usually enriched by the information from HTTP, DNS and other protocols. The increasing speed of the network links, together with the time consuming application protocol parsing, require a new way of hardware acceleration. Therefore we propose a new concept of hardware acceleration for flexible flowbased application level monitoring which we call Software Defined Monitoring (SDM). The concept … Show more

“…Based on different studies and analysis [1], [7], [15], [16], SDM possesses series of desirable features that can spur its large scale adoption in network monitoring of the next generation networks. However, some potential challenges exist in the following main areas: On the other hand, it is also challenging to find the optimum number of controllers and the best location for each controller.…”

“…Software Defined Monitoring (SDM), initially proposed in [3] and here presented by Lukáš Kekely, Viktor Puš and Jan Koěnek from CESNET, is a trade-off between software and hardware monitoring. Although SDM borrows the general idea of the uprising Software-Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm, these two do not overlap.…”

“…Few solutions exist to facilitate access of network engineers to FPGA systems. In [4], a packet processing architecture is able to forward results to the host at 100 Gb/s. Once configured, only the rule set can be configured.…”
