“…With the advent of new technologies to represent specimens and their structures, there are publications containing techniques that promote different means of graphic representation, mainly by illustrations (Coleman 2003(Coleman , 2006(Coleman , 2009Holzenthal 2008;Tereshkin 2013). Although there are publications that address graphic representations through photographs (Ray 1999;Savazzi 2011), as well as editing techniques using other types of image editors (Lababede 2004a, Lababede 2004bSolomon 2009) or Adobe Photoshop (Corl et al 2002;Taylor 2002, Taylor 2003a, Taylor 2003b, Taylor 2003cChalazonitis et al 2003;Caruso and Postel 2006;Kirsch and Geller 2006;Gross and Thapa 2012), these works are focused mainly on the medical field, especially radiology, there being as yet no manual for using these image editing tools for taxonomy, as well as for composing figures for scientific papers in the Adobe Photoshop in its current version.…”

The brightness, contrast, saturation, colour temperature, colour correction, minor tonal enhancement in problem areas and sharpness of images can be adjusted and, in some cases, images can even be "cleaned up" by removing undesirable elements such as dust spots, scratches or shadow or light spots or change the framing in order to highlight the subject and remove excess background or elements that are irrelevant for your purpose (Richardson et al 1995;Corl et al 2002;Gross and Thapa 2012). However, under no circumstances should such manipulations alter the scientific content.…”
