This study developed a versatile and facile method for creating pores and tuning the porous structure in the polymer latex films by selectively etching the added functional polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) molecules. The pore formed in the latex films had a similar morphology to that of PVP aggregation before etching. This observation promotes us to regulate the pore morphology that determines the film’s property, such as air permeability through varying the PVP molecule weight and dosage. To this end, the effects of PVP molecule weight and dosage on the pore formation were systematically studied. The results showed that the average pore size of porous film decreased from >10 μm to sub-micron (about 0.4 μm) as the molecular weight or the dosage of PVP increased. This was ascribed to the strong adsorption affinity of PVP molecule onto the latex particle surface, which further hindered the diffusion and self-assembly of PVP molecule. In addition, this interaction became much stronger when the higher molecule weight of PVP or the higher dosage of PVP was employed, leading to the decreased size of PVP aggregation, as well as the formed pores in the latex films. Furthermore, the addition of PVP had little effect on the color of coated fabric based on the results of CIE L*a*b* measurement. The proposed facile method can be used to improve the air permeability of coated fabrics.

With the aim to prepare antibacterial styrene‐acrylic emulsion, a series of bis‐quaternary ammonium salt‐containing mono‐methacrylates MEQABr‐x(x = 12, 14, 16) were synthesized as polymerizable antibacterial agents via two steps. The chemical structures of MEQABr‐x(x = 12, 14, 16) were confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H‐NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), Minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and Critical micelle moncentration (CMC) results showed that MEQABr‐x(x = 12, 14, 16) had antibacterial properties and surface properties which was influenced by its alkyl chain length. The antibacterial emulsion (SAQx‐n) was synthesized by emulsion polymerization of styrene (St), butyl acrylate (BA), acrylic acid (AA) and MEQABr‐x(x = 12, 14, 16). The structures of its films (SAQx‐n‐F) were characterized by attenuated total reflectance‐FTIR. The effects of MEQABr‐14 content or alkyl chain length of MEQABr‐x(x = 12, 14, 16) on emulsion and its films were investigated in the aspect of particle sizes, pencil hardness, adhesive force grade, thermal stabilities, surface morphology, particle morphology, and so forth. The films (SAQx‐9‐F) with 9 wt% content of MEQABr‐x(x = 12, 14, 16) showed the nearly 100% antibacterial rate against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, indicating its potential to be used as antibacterial coating.

Dye wastewater into the water system would cause a severe threat to the natural environment. To reduce the dye discharge, it is highly essential to nd a clean and green method to color cotton fabrics. Herein, this work has expediently designed the novel pigment with colored nanoparticles to dye cotton fabrics, which was based on the adsorption of dyes from dyes solution with the synthesis of worm-like hydrophilic porous silica (WHMS) and formed colored particles. It could be found that as-prepared WHMS exhibited with the larger surface area of 968.61 m 2 /g, the average size of 300 nm and the higher electronegativity on the surface of WHMS materials and could be favorable to capture dye to achieve the capacity above 500 mg/g for different cationic and reduce dyes discharge. The colored WHMS applied in dyeing cotton fabrics show the higher stability and stronger color strength by electrostatic attraction compared with original dyes, in which the mass of WHMS-dyes could be retained by above 80% in thermal decomposition, the color depth of WHMS-dyes dying fabrics increased by above1.2 times and the dye residues in the dyeing process were reduced. The high-quality dyeing fabrics can be obtained and nanospheres uniformly xed on cotton fabrics through the binder to build a layer lm, owing to its hydrophobicity and small sizes. The dyeing cotton fabrics exhibited good wet rubbing, washing fastness and hand feel. These results suggest that the WHMS-dyes can be suitable for cotton dyeing textiles as a sustainable coloring process.
