Sodium and potassium intake estimated using two methods in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil)

Abstract: CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Sodium and potassium intake from different food sources is an important issue regarding cardiovascular physiology. Epidemiological assessment of the intake of these electrolytes intake is done through food frequency questionnaires or urinary excretion measurements. Our aim was to compare these methods using a sample of Brazilian civil servants. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional baseline evaluation from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health. METHODS: Sodium and potassium inta… Show more

“…Analyses regarding healthy dietary habits could not be conducted as no depressed patients presented optimal diet, since the AHA cutoff for this metric uses a daily sodium intake cut‐off (1.5 g/day) that is very strict for the Brazilian population. For instance, ELSA‐Brasil data estimate mean daily sodium intake as high as 4 g/day .Healthy diets, such as the Mediterranean diet and others, are associated with decreased depression incidence . Moreover, certain nutrient supplements and dietary interventions may be effective for depression treatment ; use of high doses of vitamin K might prevent development of depressive symptoms in late adulthood ; and highly inflammatory diets may be associated with higher incidence of depressive symptoms .…”

“…The DASH diet score based on the intake of recommended and restricted food items (in g/d) was obtained by FFQ (34) . Given the low validity of the FFQ-estimated Na intake from ELSA-Brasil (35,36) , the daily Na intake was determined based on overnight 12-h urinary Na excretion for all study participants. The daily urinary Na excretion was obtained from the adjustment of the 12-h night Na excretion, which corresponds to nearly 47 % of the 24-h Na excretion (37) .…”
