Sodium alginate from Sargassum wightii retards mortalities in Penaeus monodon postlarvae challenged with white spot syndrome virus

Abstract: Sodium alginate extracted from brown seaweed Sargassum wightii (16.35 ± 1.42%, mean [± SD] yield from 5 extractions) was prepared as a powder or beads and used to enrich Artemia nauplii at concentrations of 100, 200, 300 and 400 mg l −1 . The alginate-enriched nauplii were fed to Penaeus monodon shrimp postlarvae (PL) stage 15 (PL15, i.e. 15 d old) for 20 d. Mean weight gain and specific growth rate over this period were 0.24 g and 15.8%, respectively, in PL groups not fed alginate, and 0.20−0.28 g and 14.7−16… Show more

“…is a largely unexploited one, which contains sulphated polysaccharides (e.g. fucoidan and alginate) with immuno‐stimulatory and free radicals quenching characteristics (Immanuel, Sivagnanavelmurugan, Balasubramanian, & Palavesam, 2012). It is also rich in various bioactive compounds such as steroids, alkaloids, phenolic compounds, saponins and flavonoids (Prabu, Sahu, Pal, Dasgupta, & Narendra, 2016; Zubia & Deslandes, 2018).…”

“…The potency of the herbal ingredients extract for bacterial disease prevention and white spot disease tackling at shrimp rearing has been reported by some researchers (Ahilan et al, 2010;Haq et al, 2011;Banerjee et al, 2012;Immanuel et al, 2012;Sahu et al, 2012;Ghosh & Chakraborty, 2013;Declarador et al, 2014;Maikaeo et al, 2015;Muliani et al, 2015;& Jha et al, 2016).The water fraction of the mangrove Ceriopstagal was effective as anti-WSSV in tiger shrimp (Sudheer et al, 2012.). Further, it mentioned that the survival rate of the tiger prawn fed 1% feeding rate per day with the addition of mangrove C.tagal water fraction as much as 500 mg/body kg/day reached 100% (Sudheer et al, 2011).…”
