The tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) is a fish of primary importance in South American aquaculture, principally in the Amazon region and has a particularly unique diet in the wild. Oryza spp, or Wild rice as it is commonly known, is native to the floodplains of muddy rivers in the Amazon region. The aim of this study was to analyze the physical performance and the effects of dietary levels of Oryza spp. via the hematological parameters, total food intake, conversion efficiency, growth ratio and swimming performance of this fish. Diets containing 45% Oryza spp. induced the best performance in tambaqui. Diets containing 15% and 30% did not affect these indices, thus indicating that this amount of Oryza can be used as an alternative energy source for this important species within Brazilian aquaculture.

A 127-day experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of feeding strategies on juvenile tambaqui's (Colossoma macropomum) growth, body composition, haematological and biochemical parameters, excretion pattern and economic indices. Fifteen tanks randomly stocked 150 juvenile tambaqui (82.0 ± 0.8 g, mean ± SEM) subjected to three feeding strategies (n = 5): self-feeder system (T1); automatic-feeding with three set meals/day (T2) and apparent satiety with three meals/day (T3). The results revealed that fish T1 and T3 showed the best feed intake, feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio and protein retention rate (p < 0.05). However, no significant differences were observed in growth, survival, haematological parameters, body composition and total ammonia nitrogen excretion among treatments (p > 0.05). Cortisol obtained a significantly higher value for fish T3 (122.92 ± 5.75 ng/ml), with a low water phosphorus value for fish T1 (0.43 ± 0.06 mg/L). Lastly, the feed cost based on the values deriving from diets revealed better indices (variable cost, unitary contribution margin and contribution margin index) for fish T1 and T3. In short, our findings suggest the benefits of using self-feeders for tambaqui aquaculture.

Blood transports lysine and other nutrients derived from the diet and ensures good health and greater productivity for the fish. Therefore, this study aimed to verify the hematological behavior of juvenile tambaqui Colossoma macropomum nourished with levels of 9.72, 12.84, 15.96, 19.08 and 22.20 g.Kg-1 of total lysine, corresponding, respectively, to the supplementation levels with L-lysine: 0.00, 4.00, 8.00, 12.00, 16.00 and 20.00 g.Kg-1 of L-lysine. The blood of the fish was collected in the initial and final periods by puncture of the caudal vein. The variables were validated by ANOVA and Tukey's test (p< 0.05). No differences were found for hemoglobin, hematocrit, CHCM, leukocytes of the eosinophil and monocyte types, and thrombocytes (p> 0.05). The changes observed in total leukocytes were not attributed to diets (p= 0.00). Means of CMV, HCM, lymphocytes and neutrophils, varied over the initial period, but not in regard to different lysine levels (p< 0.05). Thus, it is concluded that the varying lysine levels of the diets did not compromise the hematological parameters analyzed.
