Socio-economic determinants of participation in the Lolland-Falster health study

Abstract: Aim The Lolland-Falster Health Study (LOFUS) is an ongoing prospective cohort study at Lolland-Falster, one of the most socioeconomically disadvantaged areas of Denmark. “…First, only 34.1% of persons invited participated in LOFUS, which may lead to selection bias. There was an overall higher participation rate among individuals of higher income, education level, employment status, middle-aged (aged 50-60 years) and married [10]. It is already known that survey participation is lower among people of poorer socio-economic status and with disease compared with those without [37].…”

“…Half-way through the data collection, the overall participation rate was found to be 34.1% (men: 31.9%, women: 36.4%). A detailed description of the study protocol [9] and information on the socio-economic determinants of participation [10] have been published previously. For this study, we included adults aged 20 years and above (n = 10,895) recruited from 2016 to 2019, excluding women reported to be pregnant.…”

“…Diese war bei älteren Personen höher als bei jüngeren und bei Frauen höher als bei Männern. Ähnliche Trends wurden auch in anderen Studien beobachtet [22,23] [18]). Zum Ende der Basiserhebung können präzise Aussagen zur Responsequote erfolgen und Informationen zu den Non-Respondern berücksichtigt werden.…”

“…We do not know why some household−/family members chose not to participate in LOFUS or in accelerometer measurement, respectively, but it could potentially affect the results by limiting generalizability of the findings. An analysis of socio-economic determinants of participation among adults halfway through the LOFUS data collection showed that being middle-aged, female, Danish citizen, and of higher socio-economic status increased participation [67]. Further, the voluntary participation in accelerometer measurement may have increased the selection bias.…”
