“…In addition, it might also promote maladaptive behavioral responses to subsequent stresses (Elizalde et al, 2010). For instance, our CSDS model induces long-lasting neurochemical alterations in this region (Venzala et al, 2013) that have been associated to anhedonia (Banasr et al, 2010). In agreement with this idea, anhedonia has been shown to correlate with a dysfunction of the prefrontal cortex in depressed patients (Germine et al, 2011;Keedwell et al, 2005).…”

“…Our laboratory and others have evaluated the long term effects of CSDS in different behavioral tests (Becker et al, 2008;Venzala et al, 2012). Specifically, up to four-five weeks after the cessation of the social defeat procedure, we have observed anhedonia, a core symptom of clinical depression, i.e., loss of interest in normally rewarding stimuli, but also anxiety and social avoidance, signs also related to anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorders (Venzala et al, 2012(Venzala et al, , 2013. Interestingly, anhedonia and some of these behaviors induced by CSDS have been effectively reversed or prevented by different monoaminergic antidepressants supporting the predictive validity of this model (Venzala et al, 2012).…”

“…For example, Valenti found that chronic mild stress inhibited, while chronic social stress increased, the activity of dopaminergic neurons in the VTA (Valenti et al.,2012). Venzala's study demonstrated that chronic mild stress and social stress exerted inconsistent effects on various neurotransmitters' levels in many brain regions (Venzala et al.,2013). In this study, MD and CUPS induce dissimilar alterations in rats' mesocorticolimbic dopaminergic system.…”

“…Results from recent studies indicated that different types of chronic stress might exert different effects on the sufferers' central nervous system (Valenti, Gill, & Grace,2012; Venzala, Tordera, García‐ García, & Elizalde,2013). For example, Valenti found that chronic mild stress inhibited, while chronic social stress increased, the activity of dopaminergic neurons in the VTA (Valenti et al.,2012).…”

“…the natural need for social interaction and the simultaneous and opposite natural drive to avoid their sick partner. Studies on conflict behavior show that mice are good models for the study of anxiety and psychological stress [23]. If this is the case, then long-term cohabitation with Ehrlich tumor-bearing mice might be thought of as being able to induce psychological stress.…”
