Modelling Income Drivers in Peripheral Municipalities: The Case of Italian Inner Areas

The paper provides new evidence on the relationship among per capita incomes, local expenditures and territorial economic structure in Italian inner areas. The study area comprises the municipalities belonging to three Italian regions, namely, Marche, Abruzzo and Molise. The methodology employed involves a panel multilevel regression model, in order to investigate both on territorial and time changes. The period under analysis covers 2008–2016, the years following the outbreak of the global crisis. The results highlight the importance of three public expenditure categories—Environment protection and planning, Tourism, and Cultural heritage—on the growth of per capita incomes. Regional economic structure also plays an important role, especially through the rate of employees in the industrial sector. In order to increase the effectiveness of local public policies, a re-allocation of global expenditures among its various components might be recommended. Another suggestion concerns the implementation of integrated policies oriented both to tourism and to the enhancement of territorial assets.

Social sustainability is one aspect that contributes to the balance of sustainability goals, and its activities could impact and affect the subjects’ matters, including people, organisations, and communities. However, despite the rising social issues, research on the social dimension of sustainability is limited and needs more analysis, especially the efforts taken by the local authorities. Thus, this triggers the discovery of local authorities’ social sustainability initiatives (SSI) practices, mainly city council. This study aims to provide a benchmark on Social Sustainability Initiatives (SSI) currently practised by Malaysian City Councils. This study’s objectives are to identify the city councils’ SSI practices from the annual report; the SSI disclosed in annual report by determining the most prominent SSI practices among local authorities. Thus, this research adopted a qualitative method using the content analysis technique. The annual reports for the years 2018, 2019 and 2022 were used for this study for the respective City Councils. As a result, it was discovered that only ten (10) SSI themes through 39 initiatives were practised, with 14 most prominent SSIs determined. Hence, the Malaysia Local Authority has shown a commitment to preserving and protecting social sustainability and demands more promotion on what Malaysia City Councils have done in promoting sustainability.

The terms of competitiveness at the level of places and sustainable development were created in the 1980s and 1990s. In the beginning, most researchers emphasized the dimension of economic competitiveness, but in recent decades, other aspects of competitiveness, such as socio-cultural and environmental, have been highlighted. The aim of the present research is evaluation the social-cultural competitiveness in the city of Kermanshah based on a sustainable development approach. This research is descriptive and analytical, the TOPSIS model was used for data analysis, and Entropy was used to weight the indicators. After applying the weight of the indicators in the TOPSIS model, The research findings showed that the city of Kermanshah in the TOPSIS model, ranks 15th with a coefficient of 0.209; in the MABAC model, ranks 14th with a coefficient of -0.116 and in the EDAS model, ranks 14th with a coefficient of 0.122579271 is in the last and 14th position of socio-cultural competitiveness. The results showed that; Considering the nature of urban competitiveness, which is multidimensional, it is necessary to avoid a one-sided approach in urban competitiveness planning and to consider the socio-cultural, environmental, and security dimensions of urban competitiveness in an integrated manner. To improve the competitiveness of Iranian cities, while paying attention to the internal competitive advantages of the 15 studied cities, special attention should be paid to the fields of economic, environmental, socio-cultural, and security competitiveness. Each of these cities concerns their competitive role in transnational dimensions. This requires special attention to the national macro-plans.
