RESUMO Objetivo analisar o uso de álcool, tabaco e maconha e suas repercussões na qualidade de vida de adolescentes que cursam o ensino médio. Método Estudo analítico, com amostra de 169 estudantes de Ensino Médio. Foi aplicado um questionário contendo avaliação sociodemográfica, Teste de triagem do envolvimento com álcool, cigarro e outras substâncias e Escala de avaliação da qualidade de vida. Os dados foram analisados por meio de estatísticas descritivas e inferenciais. Resultados Os principais resultados mostraram que nos últimos três meses o uso de tabaco foi associado a uma qualidade de vida considerada ruim/muito ruim, o não uso com qualidade de vida muito boa/boa e satisfação com a saúde. Os estudantes que não usaram álcool consideram sua qualidade de vida muito satisfatória ou satisfatória em relação ao ambiente. Conclusão e implicações para a prática Foi confirmada a hipótese da relação entre uso de substâncias psicoativas e aspectos da qualidade de vida.

Aim To examine situations of vulnerability to human papillomavirus in the social representations of young women. Background Human papillomavirus is one of the most frequent sexually transmitted infections among women and constitutes a serious health problem among youth. This problem is embedded in psychosocial issues that promote situations of vulnerability and affect attitudes and behaviour in relation to prevention. Methods Qualitative study based on the theory of social representations, conducted among 64 female students in a high school in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The study used personal semi‐structured interviews, with a lexical analysis by Alceste 2010 software. Findings The inefficacy of information on the human papillomavirus pointed out individual and social vulnerabilities, and showed relationships between the difficulty of access and the perception of low quality in public health services, which also promotes institutional vulnerability. Discussion The representation of vulnerability to human papillomavirus infection is associated, not only with individual behaviours related to sexuality and gender identity but also to social and institutional conditions involving insufficient information and low quality of and ineffective access to public health services. Conclusion Situations of vulnerability of young women to human papillomavirus infection influence ways of thinking and acting, when they generate feelings and behaviours that put them at risk. The social representations provided knowledge about how the participants appropriated consensual and reified universes in relation to vulnerability, influencing care and awareness of prevention. Implication for nursing and health policy Situations of vulnerability, whether individual, social or institutional, warrant the attention of nurses and should be prioritized as public health policy goals to reduce the number of cases of human papillomavirus infection among younger women.

Objective: The study aims to evaluate the use of a teaching method proposed by Paulo Freire, Culture Circles, in the education of teenagers multipliers on leprosy awareness. Methods: It is an action-research study with a qualitative approach developed in a public school in Pernambuco, Brazil. Five Culture Circles were conducted involving the participation of 26 teenagers. The followings were used as data collection tools: observation, field notes, photography and filming. Results: The educational intervention on health addressed the following topics: 1) Definition and transmission of leprosy; 2) Characteristics and diagnosis of leprosy; 3) Treatment of leprosy; 4) Aesthetics, prejudice and mental health related to leprosy; and 5) Planning of educational activities for teenagers as health multipliers on leprosy awareness. The educational action on health provided this age group to perceive themselves, act as political subjects in the development of Culture Circles, and act as protagonists in the dissemination of knowledge on leprosy.Conclusions: This study highlights that the application of active methodologies, such as Culture Circles, is able to encourage the engagement of young people in community empowerment and bring together health professionals and the school community in an intersectoral work in order to develop action strategies involving the promotion of health in the context of neglected diseases such as leprosy.
