“…The cluster 'SEX CHANGE' (see Figure 4g) is composed of a variety of studies that refer to both the 'ENVIRONMENTAL-SEX-DETERMINATION' and 'SEX-DIFFERENTIATION', as these occur naturally in several animals, such as fishes and other marine animals [60]. The 'HERMAPHRODITISM' of animals that have both sexes is discussed, 'PROTOGYNY' refers to animals in which the female sexual organs reach maturity faster than male organs [61] and 'PROTANDRY' refers to the animals in which the male sexual organs are the first to reach maturity.…”

“…Socially controlled sex change involves co‐ordinated biological changes along multiple body axes that interact with each other (Goikoetxea et al ., 2017). The hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal (HPG) axis plays a principal role in reproduction, and sex‐change initiation is transduced via this axis to culminate in gonadal restructure and sex reversal (Godwin, 2010; Muncaster et al ., 2013; Nakamura et al ., 1989; Romo‐Mendoza et al ., 2018). The hypothalamic–pituitary–interrenal (HPI) axis affects sexual behavior and reproduction through its communication with the HPG axis.…”

“…Studies carried out in the red-spotted grouper Epinephelus akaara (Temminck & Schlegel 1843), a confirmed bi-directional sex change species, showed that a male-to-female sex change took place when the males were isolated, although only a few males developed slightly maturing oocytes after keeping isolated for 1 year (Okumura, 2001;Tanaka et al, 1990). In gonochoristic leopard grouper Mycteroperca rosacea (Streets 1877), male-to-female sex change of captive M. rosacea was successfully induced by social control (Romo-Mendoza et al, 2018). The success of socially controlled sex change in other hermaphrodite species demonstrates that social control of sex change is a common phenomenon in hermaphrodite fishes (Nakamura et al, 2005;Nemtzov, 1985;Robertson, 1972;Warner & Swearer, 1991).…”
