Social constructions of environmental services in a rapidly densifying peri-urban area under dual governance in Durban, South Africa

Abstract: Background: Biodiversity plays a critical role in improving the quality of life and resilience of poor urban communities in Durban. Objectives: However, the rapid densification that is taking place in the ‘rural periphery’ of the city is impacting significantly on the integrity of ecosystems, which provide valuable ecosystem services. It is also changing the relations between people and the environment. Mzinyathi and eSkebheni, in the north-west of Durban, are peri-urban areas located on Ingonyama Trust land a… Show more

“…Weak systems of formal government and planning (Wilkinson et al, 2013). Lack of coordination and cooperation at multiple scales: among stakeholder groups, management levels, and institutions (Bobbins and Culwick, 2015;Esmail and Geneletti, 2017;Jorgensen et al, 2015;Sutherland et al, 2016). Disparities in the availability of green space between established wealthy suburbs, poor suburbs, and new housing program areas (e.g.…”

“…The city is richly endowed with biodiversity and ecosystem services, which provide a critical foundation for human wellbeing and development. However, these assets are under threat due to the pro-growth agenda in the city, high levels of poverty which increases people's reliance on natural resources, and the rapid development of its rural periphery under the traditional authority system (Sim et al, 2018;Sutherland, et al, 2016). It faces significant development challenges within a context of high inequality, high levels of poverty, large housing and service backlogs and the rapid growth of informality (Sutherland et al, 2018).…”

“…Davids et al (2016) provide an assessment of ecosystem services in Durban, maps of ecosystem services hotspots and identify opportunities for securing a sustainable supply of ecosystem services. Sutherland et al (2016) focus on the intertwined issues of rapid urban growth, dual governance systems, biodiversity loss and cultural change in Mzinyathi and eSkebheni in the north-west of Durban. They explore the numerous social constructions of environmental services and the implications for resilience in the area.…”
